Maine Just Don't Feel the Same

A story about a friend who lost his love, then also lost the state he loved.

Transmission Access

Signal 002 is live.

The song begins as a breakup and gradually gives the breakup a geography. Ferries, parking lots, coastlines, food, weather, and local shorthand become reminders of someone who is no longer there. By the end, the narrator has not simply lost a person. He has lost his uncomplicated relationship with home.

The Signal is now available on Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube. Its place in the Archive remains connected to the stone and the WTS comparison that were cataloged before release day.

WTS A.2 / Replication

The second Signal repeats the problem.

Signal 001 gave the Survey one anomaly. Signal 002 gives it a second. The expected production fingerprints are different, but a faint contributor-linked pattern returns after those fingerprints are modeled out.

Kestrel is testing whether that resemblance survives randomized controls and cross-media comparison. The CMB reference is statistical only: a way to test direction and asymmetry, not a claim that the song contains a map of the sky.

WTS-RC 002.01 / Cross-modal replication

Residual Correlation Plate

A simplified view of what remains after known production signatures are modeled out. This is a comparison tool, not a map of the sky.

Two normalized contributor-associated residual series Two related but non-identical series labeled DH and MT rise across twelve normalized bins. DH MT NORMALIZED BIN 01 12
Contributor-associated clustering repeats in Signal 002. Separation is statistical; no individual stem is claimed to contain a complete pattern.
01

Cross-modal persistence

A related pattern can still be recovered from the processed image and audio after each medium’s known production features are modeled separately.

02

Large-angle comparison

Kestrel compares the residual’s direction and imbalance with large-angle CMB asymmetry models. The behavior matters more than the shape.

03

Cold-region test

No identification is claimed. This test asks a narrower question: does the same suppressed region and preferred direction survive randomized controls?

Current reading

Signal 001 gave us an anomaly. Signal 002 gives us replication. That does not prove a cause, but it makes coincidence harder to lean on.

Signal Text

Full lyrics

The lyric text is preserved without performance cues or production annotations, so it can be read as language before it is interpreted as evidence.

Oh, ayuh
Here we go now
Maine don’t feel the same

I saw her sipping Moxie in a thrift shop chair
Whoopie Pie crumbs like she didn’t care
She said, “Bread in a can is an underrated meal”
Then she ghosted my texts like I wasn’t real

Flannel jacket, wicked grin
Ocean air, pine sap, little bit of gin
Said, “Meet me by the ferry round two”
I got there at noon, she never came through

Now the gulls are laughing louder
Than they ever did before
And every ayuh sounds like goodbye
When I stumble past your door

And the lobstah boats are blaring in the bay
Tides keep turning but you’ve sailed away
I’m lost in the fog where the herons don’t stay
You’re gone
And Maine just don’t feel the same

Moon hangs low over Casco Bay
Like it knows every word I couldn’t say
Cold as January, soaked in pain
You’re gone
And Maine just don’t feel the same

Ayuh, ayuh
Maine just don’t feel the same
Ayuh, ayuh
Maine just don’t feel the same

Stephen King paperbacks stacked on the floor
She called me Pennywise and slammed the door
L.L. Bean boots, no love in the laces
Now I’m eating baked beans in emotional places

Found your scarf in a Hannaford bag
With a bent-up receipt and a half-smoked drag
You left a note that said, “Don’t be weird”
So I cried in the truck while I finished a beer

Now every moose-crossing sign
Looks like it’s judging me
And the backroads all remember
What we almost used to be

And the lobstah boats are blaring in the bay
Tides keep turning but you’ve sailed away
I’m lost in the fog where the herons don’t stay
You’re gone
And Maine just don’t feel the same

Moon hangs low over Casco Bay
Like it knows every word I couldn’t say
Cold as January, soaked in pain
You’re gone
And Maine just don’t feel the same

Come on now
One, two, three, four

We kissed once by the Auburn Walmart lot
Near that poor pole every bad driver fought
Hit two hundred times, still standing tall
Should’ve known right then we were doomed to fall

You said, “Love’s like weather, it changes fast”
I said, “Baby, this Nor’easter’s built to last”
Tried to heal with a lobster roll
But butter can’t fix what you did to my soul

Bar Harbor lights looked blurry and blue
I blamed it on fog, but it might’ve been you
Acadia cliffs and the Cadillac dawn
Pretty as ever, but the magic was gone

I heard your laugh in a tourist crowd
Turned so fast I near fell down
Just some girl from Ohio buying maple cream
A cruel little trick from a broken dream

Pine trees whisper, “Get over her, dude”
But every lighthouse feels like an empty mood
Portland streets hum a sad refrain
Love’s a rocky coast and I’m stuck in the rain

Blackflies bite and the north winds blow
There’s a hole in my heart where your Subie used to go
Asked the Kennebec what I ought to do
It rolled on south like it knew I knew

Ayuh, I’m hurting
Ayuh, I’m blue
Ayuh, this whole damn state
Still smells like you

From Kittery clear up to Caribou
There ain’t one diner booth that don’t miss you too
Red snappers in the pan
Beans from the can
But I can’t put my heart back together again

And the lobstah boats are blaring in the bay
Tides keep turning but you’ve sailed away
I’m lost in the fog where the herons don’t stay
You’re gone
And Maine just don’t feel the same

Moon hangs low over Casco Bay
Like it knows every word I couldn’t say
Cold as January, soaked in pain
You’re gone
And Maine just don’t feel the same

Now the Moxie tastes bitter
The whoopies taste plain
Pine trees drip with that old coastal rain
I still love this place
But I can’t shake your name
You’re gone
And Maine just don’t feel the same

You’re gone
And Maine just don’t feel the same
Ayuh, Maine just don’t feel the same
No, Maine just don’t feel the same

Field Note 002.01

A map without a country.

A stone recovered from Casco Bay in 2011 carries a naturally contrasting surface whose outline produced an immediate recognition response in Dr. Evelyn Kestrel. The Field Note keeps that problem narrow: what was seen, when it became familiar, and why the comparison is being withheld.
