How the work comes together

The Mirror Home is Derek Hoffman and Mei Ting, working remotely and refusing to settle on one genre. It runs on late-night file transfers, Zoom calls, and Derek's ongoing, unresolved wish that he could sing.

Derek handles guitars, drums, piano, spoken word, and — again — the wish that he could sing. Mei brings bass, violin, extra guitars, and vocals, and is generally the one who makes a song sound like it means something. Together they write the lyrics and shape the arrangements, and they lean on AI for production — including, when a song needs it, the male vocal Derek's own voice won't cooperate with.

The sound moves around: alternative rock, Americana, industrial, blues, electronic, spoken word, folk, film-score textures. That's on purpose. A quiet memory and a cyberpunk firefight shouldn't be forced through the same speakers.

Personnel

Two rooms. One collaboration.

Roles blur constantly. Every finished song has been argued over, revised, and approved by both of them.

Record A

Derek Hoffman

Builds the instrumental frame, wrestles the lyric until it says what it means, and is still hoping the singing thing works out eventually.

  • Guitars, drums, piano
  • Spoken word and arrangement
  • Lyrics, editing, production direction

Record B

Mei Ting

Grounds the track with melody, texture, and edge — usually the one who can tell you what a song is missing before anyone else can.

  • Bass, violin, additional guitars, vocals
  • Vocal guides and melodic development
  • Lyrics, editing, atmosphere, final creative calls

Observed Range

A little hard to pin down.

Genre is treated as material rather than identity. These recurring qualities describe the music more accurately than a single label.

01

Intimate

Piano, strings, close vocals, memory, distance, and confession.

02

Haunted

Industrial pulse, dark electronics, ritual textures, and spoken word.

03

Explosive

Hard rock, driving rhythm, distorted guitars, and controlled impact.

04

Sideways

Satire, absurdity, bad dating profiles, beards, and occasionally a fly.

Production Note

Human songwriting. Assisted production.

The songs, the arrangements, the performances, the final calls — that's Derek and Mei. AI comes in on the production side: testing ideas, rendering takes, and covering male vocals on songs that need a voice Derek doesn't have.
