A Map Without
a Country
An ordinary stone creates an uncomfortable research problem: Evelyn recognizes its shape before she understands why.
Object of Observation
The problem begins with recognition.
I recognized the outline before I understood that I recognized it. That is an inconvenient sentence to place in a scientific record.
Recognition is not measurement. Familiarity is particularly unreliable because the brain is constantly comparing new information against old patterns without asking permission. So I began again.

An ordinary stone. An unwelcome familiarity.
Artifact 002.01 was recovered from Casco Bay in 2011. The visible shape appears to result from natural variation in the stone. There is presently no indication that anyone carved it or altered the surface to produce the outline. That should make this simple. It does not.
Observation
The contrast is physically part of the stone in the available record. No deliberate marking is established.
Recognition
The outline produced an immediate familiarity response before any formal geometric comparison was made.
Control
The photograph was removed from the Signal record and compared against unrelated geological outlines before the restricted comparison was revisited.

A shape without a local source.
Eventually I located the source of the familiarity. The outline on Artifact 002.01 closely resembles a landmass represented in material already held under restricted Wyman classification.
There is no plausible documentary relationship between that material and a stone recovered from Casco Bay. That is interesting. It is not yet extraordinary.
The underlying comparison remains withheld until the stone can be traced, measured, and reviewed without exposing the reference image to the next observer.
