Working Principle

We shape the music around the message, the words, the Signal.

Genre is not the starting point. It is one of the tools selected after the story has made its demands.

From first idea to finished Signal

The sequence is consistent, but the work inside it remains flexible. Stages overlap, repeat, and reopen when the song requires another pass.

The Signal

A song begins with something worth following: a memory, image, sentence, character, place, joke, or unresolved question.

  • The subject arrives before the genre.
  • The first working record may be a phrase, voice note, photograph, or rough musical idea.

The Language

The lyrics are drafted and revised until the words can carry the full weight of the idea without explanation around them.

  • Meaning, rhythm, rhyme, and singability are edited together.
  • Performance labels are added only after the lyric itself is stable.

Arrangement

The Structure

The music is shaped around the message. Form, tempo, dynamics, and genre are selected according to what the lyric requires.

  • A quiet confession and a satire are not forced through the same frame.
  • The arrangement remains open until the emotional arc is clear.

Derek and Mei build the human foundation through instruments, spoken word, vocal guides, editing, and shared decisions.

The Production

AI is used as a production instrument: to render, test, and complete arrangements, and when needed, to provide the male singing voice.

  • Generated results are treated as takes to evaluate, not answers to accept automatically.

Preservation

The Archive

The completed song enters the Archive with the public release and the records that gathered around it during writing, production, and later review.

  • Signals may connect to Field Notes, Artifacts, and Collections.
  • Some connections are clear at release; others become visible only after the records are compared.

Remote Collaboration

Two rooms. One working document.

The project is built through Zoom calls, shared files, late-night revisions, and the occasional heroic attempt to explain a musical idea over a bad connection.

Production Transparency

The tool is named because it matters.

AI is part of The Mirror Home’s production process. It is used to test arrangements, render performances, and provide a male singing voice when needed. It does not replace the project’s lyric writing, concept development, revision, instrument and female vocal tracks, curation, or final judgment.

The public process record explains how the music was made. Archive analysis begins only after the finished files and their related records have been preserved together.

The next Signal may require a different sound. The method remains.
