Field Note 001.03 / Open
A Road Through
Another Life
A contextual note on one roadside photograph and its later place within the memory preserved by “Light I Couldn't Hold.”
Object of Observation
An ordinary image occupying an uncommon place in the record.
The photograph shows an impala standing beside a road in Hluhluwe–iMfolozi Park. At first glance, it is one quiet travel image among many: an animal pauses, the camera is raised, and the journey continues.
Years later, the image resurfaced during work on Signal 001. Whether it preserved the memory, awakened it, or simply remained near it cannot be established. What can be observed is that the two have remained linked ever since.

The image preserves a pause.
Nothing decisive happens in the frame. Its importance lies in the pause between destinations—and in the fact that this small moment remained visible after much of the surrounding time had blurred.
Observation
The image is a record of looking rather than possession: a road, an animal, and a brief redirection of attention outside the human story.
Context
The photograph belongs to the 1999 journey associated with “Light I Couldn't Hold.” Road, distance, crossing, and separation recur across both records, but their connection remains interpretive.
The connection is preserved rather than explained.
