Archive Notes

The photograph preserves the shoreline at St. Lucia after the path through the coastal woods opened at the top of a tall sand dune and the Indian Ocean first came into view. The image itself was made only after the descent, once the walk had begun along the coast.

It was taken on an old Ricoh point-and-click 35mm camera in mid June 1999. The frame keeps the elements honest: open beach, distant haze, a few people reduced almost to marks, and the sensation of arriving somewhere wide after moving through enclosure.

I keep the image with Light I Couldn't Hold because the song names St. Lucia directly, and because this shoreline belongs to the same documented journey preserved by the surrounding records. The picture does not explain the song; it sharpens the place memory keeps returning to when the song is nearby.

WTS A.2 / Visual provenance. The surviving display copy shows the expected age, scan softness, and minor imperfections of an older photographic print or film transfer. Nothing in the image needs embellishment to matter. Its value is documentary: it preserves the moment the coast entered the record as a seen place rather than a remembered destination.

I keep coming back to how little the frame actually contains. A dune line, some haze, a few people who aren't posing. It's not evidence of anything. It's just the beach.

“The photograph can tell me where the beach was. Memory is responsible for the rest, which is exactly why I keep the two separate.”
