Archive Notes
Derek photographed the impala during a South African journey in late June 1999. The frame is quiet: a road, an animal, and a brief pause before the journey continued.
The image resurfaced during work on Light I Couldn't Hold more than two decades later. It did not explain the song, but it restored a piece of the journey the song was trying to understand.
WTS A.2 / Visual provenance. Standard analysis of the display copy confirms the expected SynthID marker. A second, low-amplitude structure remains after known generation, watermark, and compression features are removed. It is absent from local control images. Its angular distribution resembles cosmic microwave background anisotropy but does not align with the local reference map. The correlation is statistically significant; its physical meaning remains unestablished.
